I think a better system would be to only allow property owners (real estate valued over a certain amount set by state legislature) and business owners (gross income over a minimum amount) to vote plus a requirement to pass a basic civics test every 6 years.

We should start with just the basic civics test which will eliminate 75% of leftist voters.

If you can't name the three branches of our government then you shouldn't be allowed near a voting booth.

If you can't name the three branches of our government, your parents should demand school vouchers and school choice! (Actually, even if you can name them...)

Alternatively, only those who have children (invested in the future) should vote.

Exceptions could be made for military veterans who have also invested in the long term survival of the nation.

The idea of "you can't vote unless you are/were paying taxes" is not new. This would essentially be a "poll tax", but with a more modern implementation. Poll taxes existed in many states until the passage of the 24th Amendment, which made them unconstitutional. (In our country's earliest years, such poll taxes constituted the majority of government income in some areas.) I am not a lawyer, but that's my simplistic read of the 24th Amendment. That said, Amendments can be repealed (by the proper means). Unfortunately, I see that as highly unlikely for the foreseeable future. We have already passed the "too many people know they can effectively vote themselves benefits from the public coffers" threshold.

I will add that I'm greatly disappointed by the lack of discussion about the "immorality of the national debt". Back in the good old days, some of us learned that "borrowing" money with neither the intent nor the ability to repay the debt was effectively theft. Theft was immoral/evil/unethical/wrong. Yet, that is precisely what our ever-increasing national debt is. Worse, we are saddling people who are not yet even born with that debt. They have no voice in objecting to the debt which was incurred (and benefited someone else) before their birth. So today, theft from the as-yet-unborn is apparently not considered wrong! That's crazy!

What will happen if one day they say, "We're just not paying for someone else's spending spree before we were born" ??

"...junkies, homeless people, criminals, illegals and welfare recipients." You just described the democratic party's base.

Many people (primarily on the Left) would, and do, find this proposal abhorrent!

The simple facts expose themselves. Many of our leadership class use the tax system as a means to secure votes. Votes from hose who are not affected by the rising taxes. It is much like how the wealthy elites are not affected by rising inflation.

They will cry "this is unfair! Everyone should be involved in "Democracy!"

The answer to their cries is simple, a National Consumption tax that EVERYONE pays! By everyone I do mean everyone, the rich, the middle class, the poor, non-profits, churches, corporations, small businesses. No one is exempt! This doe snot need to be 35% like the Democrats demagogued! 10% is a fine starting point. If after the 1st year this does not fund the government, cuts need to be made, if those cuts can't be made then the politicians need to go to the people and ask for more. Well, good luck with that because the people are likely to have none of that!

And while were are at it, NO NEW BORROWING! For any reason!

Voting was never meant to be the linchpin of society that America has morphed it into. I haven't had a tax liability at all for most of my adult life, and I'm just fine with not voting; if all we get out of the effort is someone like Donald Trump or Joe Biden, it's not worth the effort.

You would have to add property taxes to the list.

i guess the collector of the tax would dictate jurisdiction. paying federal income &or cap gains = federal vote. state income (where applicale) = state elections. property tax = county/city/local elections.

Yes. Sales and property tax would justify voting in local elections.
