Gay people in America really did have a tough run for a long time, particularly in the fifties. People were fired from the government for being gay. The police raided gay bars. Being gay was also considered a mental disorder until the early seventies. It was also not unusual to hear stories of kids being “disowned” by their parents for being gay. Eventually, people started to see this as unfair, and attitudes began to change unevenly in the eighties and nineties.
Of course, like far too many things in America, the scale didn’t just shift back to even; it kept going all the way to the other abusive extreme.
