Provocative essay, sad but true. Almost all of the productive things people could choose to do but don't require ambition and hard work. It's easier to take the path of least resistance, even though it often leads nowhere. As you say, there's a lot of mind-altering things going on in the techno matrix that kind of enslave people like a drug, gaming/gambling, or a porn addiction. The artificial/virtual experience instead of reality is so common with our technology, and I fear for our future when AI personalities develop to the point where they seem real, but will lack a soul, or true empathy. That this has all happened in just my lifetime! Zager & Evans' "In the year 2525" seems like it's coming centuries faster than they wrote about.
