In Defense of White People

A lot of people don’t see it this way, but I’ve always thought it was dumb to have pride in your race. To me, it has always seemed like a way to try to get unearned glory. You know, “Alexander the Great and Winston Churchill were great leaders, so, as a white man, I am like them.” But I shouldn’t get credit for being like them just because I have the same skin color, I should get credit for what I ACCOMPLISH in life.

Of course, since I think that way, I also feel zero guilt for what other white people have done. I didn’t keep any slaves. I haven’t oppressed anybody. I didn’t kill anyone like Ted Bundy. If other white people did, that has nothing to do with me.

Whatever your color happens to be, that’s the nice thing about being judged as an individual. For example, if you’re black and you’re judged as an individual, it means you’re not responsible for who some gangbanger shoots, trashy ghetto behavior on a Carnival Cruise, or Jasmine Crockett sounding like an idiot. You’re just responsible for you, which is how it should be.

All that being said, there are a lot of weird things about the way we deal with race in the United States.

Everyone EXCEPT white Americans is encouraged to be proud of their race. Meanwhile, white people are the only race you can legally discriminate against and the only race it’s culturally acceptable to trash.

Hispanic Americans can spend all day talking about “brown pride,” while black liberals can say the vilest, racist filth imaginable about white people, but if a white person says, “It’s okay to be white,” they’re portrayed as some kind of white supremacist.

It has gotten so bad on that front that the silliest, most abusive comments about white people are just treated like normal commentary. There are almost endless examples we could use of this, but I particularly like this idiocy from Joy Reid:

This reminds me of when feminists say things like, “What do we need men for?” When you hear that, you’re supposed to just let it roll off your back and pretend that men didn’t create, invent, build, and defend pretty much our entire society from top-to-bottom because the truth will make some women feel bad.

If you took men’s contributions off the table, women would basically be living in tastefully decorated caves and sleeping on elegant piles of leaves. That doesn’t make women bad. That doesn’t mean there aren’t accomplished women or that women haven’t been held back in many ways through a lot of history. As a matter of fact, our society couldn’t even exist without women having children and inspiring men to do something other than play games and hit each other in the heads with clubs all day in a never-ending struggle for dominance.

Yet and still, all those nasty comments you hear about how valueless men are require almost a nuclear grade level of denial about what males bring to society.

It’s the same thing with white people.

White people are not the only ones who built anything cool, invented anything wonderful, and moved the world forward, but it really was mostly white people.

BY A LOT.

Capitalism, the Internet, the Constitution, going to the moon, ending slavery, automobiles, airplanes, democracy – probably 90% of the best things on Earth, or more, are primarily a result of white people.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t other worthwhile civilizations or great cultures. Nor does it mean that there aren’t lots of other great and talented people of other races.

Ancient Egypt built the pyramids and had one of the earliest forms of writing. China has a long, intricate history, and it invented gunpowder, paper, and the compass. The ancient Islamic caliphate made a lot of advances in math and astronomy. We could certainly go on with this, and those civilizations deserve a certain level of respect for what their ancestors accomplished.

I could also list a significant number of non-white people I respect or admire for one reason or another.

Quickly, off the top of my head, I could point to Muhammad Ali, Jackie Robinson, David Goggins, Naval Ravikant, Daniel Cormier, Cesar Millan, Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell, Hannibal Barca, Sadhguru, Zuby, Malcolm X, Les Brown, Sun Tzu, Bruce Lee, Royce Gracie, and Balaji Srinivasan.

However, if you want to have a comparison between how many people were freed, moved into prosperity, given human rights, and how much humanity was carried forward, white people as a group are #1 and are so far ahead of everyone else that there is no meaningful #2.

In one sense, people realize this.

That’s why America is the top destination in the world for immigrants and why Europe as a whole is #2. It’s why “white neighborhoods” are a synonym for “nice neighborhoods,” even though that’s not always true. It’s why “merit-based” inevitably means more white (and to be fair, Asian) people getting hired than the alternative.

On the other hand, the denial of reality about this subject is so deep and so wide, even among some white liberals, that it’s hard to believe it’s real.

We’re told white people succeeding MUST BE because of “privilege” or because of white racism against other races, as opposed to it just being the standard way things have unfolded, even in non-multi-racial societies, for the last 2,000 years. Look at what Greece, Rome, Britain, and the United States have accomplished and tell me why you’d expect anything else other than the ancestors of people like that to succeed.

The truth is, all of this is obvious, and whether they will admit it or not, almost everyone is already aware of it on some level, but it’s just considered gauche to admit the truth out loud.

If you want a comparison, imagine if you heard people all day long, every day, saying Michael Jordan was a terrible basketball player… one of the worst of all time. They’d tell you he was a disaster for the NBA and was not even worthy of starting. But then, imagine those same people becoming outraged if you point out that Michael Jordan made the NBA all-star team 11 times, earned 5 MVPs, 6 Finals MVPs, and won 6 NBA titles.

The equivalent happens every day in America. You constantly hear people who say things this stupid:

But nobody is supposed to laugh in that guy’s face, say and tell him he’s a moron, because white people, more specifically male, white Americans are responsible for computers.

We have dumb, self-hating white liberals literally kissing black people’s feet as a way of apologizing for their race:

She acts as if she’s not part of a race that did more for humanity and, yes, black people, than pretty much any other race on earth. Just the US alone has sent hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of aid to Africa in the last few decades in return for almost nothing but grief.

Now, you might say, “Well, are you saying white people are superior by virtue of the color of their skin?”

Not at all.

In fact, I explicitly reject the whole idea of white supremacy. Like I noted at the beginning of this column, every person should be judged by merit, character and their accomplishments, not skin color.

Being white doesn’t make you more worthy of success than anyone else, but the flip side of that is also true. If you’re white, your skin color doesn’t make you less worthy of success than other races, justify race-based discrimination against you, or mean that you’ve somehow, some way, lived a privileged life.

At the end of the day, it really is “okay to be white,” and white people need to be much, much more intolerant of people who reject that idea.
