Sad to learn that we've lost a man of great wit, humor and intelligence. Thanks so much for that fine list of quotes. I will come back to to it often for a breath of wisdom and wry humor concerning the state of the human animal.

P.J. crushed it with 19 and 18. The whole notion of rewarding the elite with government power makes me feel genuinely sorry for the nitwit who thinks that's a good idea, and scared for myself. The charity quote reminds me of the Freemasonry heresy, the notion that we can serve God through government charity. No, you try to take His place and His glory when you do that, so you move yourself out from under the umbrella of His protection. It's sad to see wise people like P.J. die because it lowers the average wisdom of us all. RIP, until His return.

RE 19: Conservatives regularly point out that everywhere socialism has been tried, it has resulted in poverty and tyranny. And socialists regularly reply that that's just because the utopian socialist dreams of the founders were hijacked by greedy, power-hungry people. Okay, let's grant that that's so. What does it say about your system when every time it is tried, greedy, power-hungry people manage to hijack it and ruin it? If one time in a hundred that happened, we could say, okay, problem with the implementation details. But when that happens every time, that's a pretty clear sign that there's a flaw in your system. It attracts greedy, power-hungry people and it has no defense against them.

Saying that power corrupts is like calling the Greek lsles “scenic”; it’s accurate, but doesn’t begin to describe the situation.
