Some years ago, in a United Way meeting about diversity I had the temerity to mention to the gaggle of liberal women assembled to revile the Boy Scouts policy on gay scoutmasters. After hours of nonsensical palaver, I told the assembled diverse ladies that the only thing they were not going to tolerate was a diversity of thought. This was in '93 and it has only gotten worse, to the point of murder. I cannot think of one Democrat pundit, podcaster, reporter, columnist, celebrity or politician that I would believe about anything they uttered regarding unity, democracy, civility or bipartisanship. Just lies.

They only want 'unity' if it's in obedience and submission to them. When they don't get those things, they go postal (dated phrase, but you did mention '93!).

going postal was an apt description of our current age. Crazy guys were shooting up their offices and coworkers. They even made a movie about it. Not political, especially, just economics.

I referenced it in passing as it was treated more as a punchline in the 90s. There's a bit about it on 'No Cure for Cancer' by Denis Leary.

Falling Down a Michael Douglas film from 93 sums up the whole sense of helplessness that was reflected by the “going postal” era. Super movie.

Yeah in some sense the mayhem has been a long time coming. The filmmakers claim he's meant to be the bad guy, but they apparently never fully understood the character archetype.

Someone recently pointed out that the leftists read and interpret the constitution the same way as atheists read the bible, hoping to find some way to use it against the people that actually believe in both. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of those antifa and blm scum are armed up and hoping for a fight. I do wonder where they get the idea that they won't be slaughtered if such a thing were to come about. I am 100% certain that all branches of law enforcement and the military will back the conservative right in any such event. I believe that a lot of people are on edge, waiting for the other shoe to drop, and I for one, am ready. I am not going anywhere unarmed for the foreseeable future. This is what the left has done to our country.

But what if they post a mean tweet about you? Surely you'd have to apologize then, right? Those people just don't understand what it means to confront someone, like you, who won't back down. God bless you, "keep your powder dry," and let's all pray we don't need to revert to the days of "Liberty Valence" because the law is not enough.

The left started cancel culture. They're only crying because they never thought it would come for THEM, and that's probably because they are unwavering in their unassailable belief that they're a Good Person™, each and every one, no matter how vitriolic they become.

Now, I'm not so worried that some Verizon tech or Microsoft drone or whatever believes this stuff, as long as they're not making any actual decisions with power. I care a whole hell of a LOT if it's someone in public service or who works with children or vulnerable populations. If you can excuse straight-up murder of someone for speaking an opinion you don't like, you should never be allowed to be in charge of anything, ever.

“If you put JD Vance and Kamala Harris in a room together and asked them about 100 different policies, they’d probably disagree on at least 95 of them.”

Could Kamala Harris articulate a response to 100 policies? Even 10?

“Could Kamala Harris articulate a response to 100 policies? Even 10?”

Yes.

Kamala has demonstrated she is in fact quite proficient at word salad.

Now, if the question were whether she could articulate a *coherent* response…

More examples of the Left making ridiculous comparisons of misbehavior- yeah, maybe our guy did kidnap and kill 5 children, but hey, your guy crossed the intersection against the "Dont Walk" sign, so they're both criminals! Proportionality means nothing to dishonest people grasping at straws in a losing debate. I had a family member argue that Michael Byrd was justified in assassinating Ashley Babbitt because "She broke through a door, and she was trespassing! She shouldn't have been there, so she deserved to be killed." You can't make this stuff up, but it is the way the Left emotes. Violence takes the place of reason, esp when frustrated toddlers hear the word; "no." I don't know how this turns out as our leftist education system has churned out this level of reasoning ability, buttressed by the media. While scanning for Sunday Night Football last night, I flashed across Steve Colbert- of all people- going up to receive an Emmy. I said to my wife, "if this doesn't sum up Hollywood perfectly, what does? A man who stars in a show that fails so badly it has been cancelled gets the Emmy? What a farce!"

There’s a serious problem of widespread mental illness on the left. That anyone sane would think, let alone publicly declare, the things said by the tax collector is evidence of a delusional ideologue unable to co-exist with anyone with whom she disagrees.

They want to cancel you for saying there are two genders or that masks don't work.

You can to cancel them because they called for your murder.

These are not the same.

Calling for murder is materially worse, and for that they should be canceled/banned.

Cheering for murder, as sick as it is, should not result in a speech ban. Not by government, not by social media.

We saw how it turned out when social media companies decide based on politics who should be banned.

But “canceled” in terms of real life consequences? Absolutely.

You have to wonder how many liberals who haven't spewed malevolence aren't feeling and thinking it. I'm guessing a lot more than the ones who have revealed themselves as the awful human beings they are.

Thinking it, feeling it, silently satisfied that that "dangerous, hateful man" got what he had coming to him, all the while missing Charlie's most important and consistent message, that politics should never take the place of your personal relationship with Christ. Because once you come to believe in Him, you finally can embrace truth and then everything changes.

Not only do they miss his message, they actively, purposefully avoid or twist it. Christ is as horrifying to them as the cross is to a vampire. Perhaps there really are vampires, dead to life but forever committed to snuffing out anyone who lives in the light.

Yeah. When John talked about millions acting like demons, it made we wonder, again, how many demons there are, and how many Leftists are actively possessed? They've rejected the armor of God, so they've certainly opened themselves up.

Agree. When someone uses their free speech to celebrate harm or speak intent to harm others this is where their rights end. They should be fired and canceled/banned off social media permanently. What happened to live and let live, and agree to disagree? We can’t have a society if this murderous hate threats is allowed to continue in our country.

Andy G's avatar

I agree they should be fired.

But other than those who make comments directly inciting violence, I don’t think they should be banned from social media.

They have the right to speak their foul ideas. We don’t want social media companies deciding who gets to say what political speech. We saw how that turned out.

But RL consequences? Absolutely.

How come so many "conservatives" seem so squishy about cancel culture? Seems to me like cowardice is the simplest explanation, but is that really it?

Expand full comment
Karen Lynch's avatar

I think because they are principled and they want to be sure they aren’t doing the same thing they say others shouldn’t. They need good, well reasoned articles like this one.

Exactly.

There should not be government sanctions against any of these people.

And other than perhaps a few who directly incited violence, I don’t think they should be banned from social media for their comments either.

But lose their jobs because their employer finds their statements harmful to the employer’s business?

Absolutely.

That’s not cancel culture.

Cancel culture is finding tweets from years back by a teenager and organizing a public campaign that the person should be fired / doxxed / etc. for those tweets.

I’m generally not in favor of that.

But that’s not what has happened here.

JH came close to making my point above - and what he wrote is consistent with it - but didn’t quite fully get there.

I wish he had.

30 years ago, no one — and I mean NO ONE would have cheered the Oklahoma City bombing. There’s principle, and then there’s cowardice. And I have absolutely no problem calling out conservatives for cowardice when I see it.

May be cowardice for some but certainly not all. The right has been calling out cancel culture for years. I think there’s a big difference in what’s happening now and what happened in the past, but the charge is being made and as I said, good well reasoned arguments will make a difference for those who aren’t sure. I think Charlie Kirk’s death is going to change a lot of things.

It's cowardice. I'm calling it out. Google the name Steven "Destiny" Bonnell and then tell me these people shouldn't be named, shamed, and shit-canned as forcefully as possible. And I'm seeing examples of it right here in my own home town. I **am not giving** and **will not give** the benefit of the doubt to people who wish to kill me or see me dead.

It’s intended as an insult to those who are uncomfortable with the thought of getting ghouls fired, because “cancel culture.” John is, of course, not among those people. But the criticism of supposed cancel-culture hypocrisy is not limited to the left.
