It is what radicals do in their revolutionary movements. Drag the Overton Window (typically left) and then claim it is the new normal.

The explanation for what is all f*cked up is this.

In 1960 33% of the workforce was female.

In 2026 it is about 60%.

The shift in the Overton Window is simply that females now dominate our socioeconomic space and compared to the cognitive processes of men that shape society and politics, they are aliens. But since they dominate, they can claim that the standards of men are alien.

I completely agree with you.

I am disputing your statistics. I believe you are confusing labor force participation with overall representation in the workforce.

In 1960, about 33% of the women aged 16 or older (this is the definition used by Bureau of Labor statistics) were in the workforce, while about 83% of the men aged 16 or older were in the workforce.

For women, the labor force participation peaked at 60% of women in 1999 and has dropped to 57.5% today.

For men, the workforce participation has steadily dropped from 87% in 1948 to 67.5% today.

Now let's look at the total percentage of the workforce that are women. In 1948, 28% of the workforce were women. Today, 47% of the workforce are women. Men have been, and continue to be the majority of the workforce.

The trend of women in the workforce based on marital status has changed significantly. In the early 1900s, the overwhelming number of women in the workforce were single. When they married, they quit their jobs to stay at home full time.

Just after WWII, the percentage of married women in the workforce increased greatly. Up to WWII, many states had marriage bans in place for women. Married women could legally not be employed. During the war, a large percentage left the workforce for military service. At the same time, the need for skilled labor skyrocketed. Marriage bans were eliminated.

What has been ignored is a significant number of men who returned from the war were no longer employable. Disabled veterans that wanted to work were still unemployable. There was no Americans with Disabilities act. Another group returned with combat fatigue or war neurosis (PTSD) and would never hold down a job for the rest of their lives. Many took their own lives. Women who were married to these vets had to go to work and became the sole providers for their families. I had great uncle in this category.

Another trend started, women who had raised their children were returning to the workforce. Prior to WWII, taking care of the home was a full time, 24/7 job. During the 50s, many factories converted from war production to manufacturing household appliances that were promoted as making the work of housewives easier. All of a sudden, women had free time. So, after their children were raised, many returned to the workforce to keep busy and earn extra income.

My grandmother did this. My grandfather never saved for retirement because the government was doing that for him, Social Security. He entered the workforce with a 6th grade education back in 1929 because his dad lost everything in the Stock Market Crash. He spent the rest of his life doing unskilled labor so he never earned much. Because of banking laws, she could not have her own account. At first, she just put aside the money in their savings account. She wanted to buy a house. My grandfather viewed owning a home as a waste of money because rent was cheaper than a mortgage. One day he discovered the money and spent it on a new car and a used mobile home. My grandmother was furious.

So, she had her brother open an account that she could use to stash money away. When the laws changed and she could have her own account, her brother gave her the money she had saved and she did just that. Then through the help of a church member that was a banker, she invested the money. By then she had started her own business, a day care and was actually earning more than my grandfather. He never knew. He thought she was watching the children for free because she loved children.

When my grandfather retired, he learned that social security was not going to cut it. My grandmother then told him she is going to do the traveling she never could do before. He said how, and she informed him of what she had been doing. Without her savings, his social security, was not enough. All of a sudden, he thought travel was a great idea, and my grandparents lived a comfortable retirement.

The recession of the 70s had a huge impact. Many men lost their jobs, and a significant number of them refused to take any job earning less than they had before. The unskilled labor and blue collar workers often refused to even retrain to change occupations. They were doing what their daddy did and his daddy before him. He was not going to change now. So wives went back to work.

This prompted my aunt to attend law school at night and she eventually became an attorney that made excellent money. My uncle decided he never had to work again. There are many other social trends that a significant number of men bought into. It became acceptable for them to stay at home while their wife’s worked.

Now, if you look at the trends today, more Republican women are working than democratic women. I know a few, and they hold strong conservative views. They are not the enabling pushovers that care more about feelings than logic that the far left women are. My wife is friends with a woman who owns her own business and she has no problem firing those who are not producing, no matter if they are male or female or what their sad story is.

The problem with generalities is they allow one to make conclusions that fit their narrative. I was trained as a scientist and I was trained to look deeper for the real underlying causes. Things are rarely as simple as they seem.

Thanks for the detailed statistics breakdown and correction. I relied on a prompt asking Grok what is the share of the female workforce in 1960 and today. It appears that the answer was the percentage of working age females, and not the ratio of male to female.

However, I don't think that it changes the point I am making. The point being that moving to a more female dominated socioeconomic situation has resulted in a dragging the window of what they like to consider normal over what the rest of us think is normal.

I do agree to a point. Unfortunately, we have raised a couple of generations of soy boys. Many of the kids today, if they have a father in the picture, that father sets a very poor example of what men should be.

Now, I was born and raised in CA and I am in the process of leaving. My son and his wife are in Montana and that is where we are moving to. Right now we spend two weeks in CA and two weeks in Montana because we were able to purchase a home in Montana and are getting our home in CA ready to sell. I have been pleasantly surprised when in Montana. It is like it was in CA 40 years ago. The majority of men I have encountered are real men. Large families are much more common than in CA. Most of the women I have encountered hold traditional values and are looking for men to marry that are the protectors of the family and do what needs to be done. A fair number are in the workforce but know there are biological differences between men and women and they cannot do everything men do but they also know men cannot do everything they can do.

I experienced this wussification of boys in high school. When I was a sophomore, PE became coed. It was the era of pushing for the ERA and a small group of women on the left were pushing the narrative that women and men are equal in every way. Most of the conservative women knew this was BS. There are real biological differences.

Through middle school and my freshmen year, PE was separated by sex. Us boys thrived on playing rough. when we played football it was supposed to be two hand touch. We pushed that and played more of tackle football. The very few who objected were the ones that had been protected by mommy their entire life. My mother was a single mother by then because dad decided that kids interfered with his toys. He had to have the newest and best toys and he had a dead end job that did not pay for that and financially supporting his 3 children. My mom went to school to become an RN and when she started working was earning more than my father. Mom decided that it was too much to deal with my father doing whatever he could do to get out of child support so she went to court and changed the divorce decree, he no longer paid child support and he still had his visitation rights.

My mom was the one that told me I got what I deserved when I was injured doing typical boy stuff. When I injured my back playing stupid rough games with other boys when I was in 8th grade, she did not go down to the school to complain. My father though wanted to blame the school. Yes, the school would be liable if it happened today because they stacked the broken furniture in the open field at the back of the school that was also used for PE and an unsupervised play area during the one hour lunch break. Us boys played all sorts of physical games in the junk pile. It had been there for at least 15 years. It was there when my father attended that school when it was a high school.

My mother made it clear, as the oldest, it was my job to protect my siblings. She was the one who made it clear that I had to stand up to bullies at school because that was the only way to stop them. Reporting them to teachers and administrators never worked and made the problem worse. Besides, teachers and administrators would overlook fights related to teaching the bullies a lesson. It was very effective.

That year of coed PE changed everything. Us boys were forced to play a gentle form of football so we would not hurt the girls. The girls mostly hated football so they mostly just stood around and did nothing. Same with basketball. We loved playing a game called smear the queer (before that term was taken over to mean something different by the far left). We used threw partially deflated volleyballs and wore the red marks we got as badges of honor. The goal was not to show any pain when smacked hard with the ball. That was out with coed PE.

That was the start of raising boys to be wimps. It was soon followed by parents filing lawsuits over all sorts of things that parents of previous generations considered normal childhood stuff that needed to be experienced to learn how to deal with the real world.

The last few years of my teaching career I would regularly have boys come to me to say they were going to call their mothers to let them know I hurt their feelings. My response often was in my day, no boy would go running to mommy over hurt feelings. I had a few mothers and fathers complain to the administration I said that. When the meeting occurred, I would focus on the real issue. They got hurt feelings because I caught them doing some misbehavior and called them out on it. When I got the response that I was supposed to give them a warning, I said you have done school for more than 10 years and and have had 10 years of warnings. Warnings have not worked so I go straight to the consequences. My wife was a science teacher also and pretty much responded the same way.

Several years ago, my wife started complaining that I did not help as much as I should with the housework. Our son was about 4 and was a handful, like the majority of 4 year olds. There was not enough hours in the day for either of us to do all we needed to do, and there was no time to do what we wanted to do.

Later, on a stormy evening, the main water line to our house broke. With a child in the house, it needed to be fixed immediately. I was able to get to the local home improvement store to get what I thought I might need to make repairs. Then in the cold rain, I dug up the water line, which meant I was digging up mud. Where we live, the soil is mostly clay and when it mixes with water it forms a heavy mud that sticks to everything, including shovels. It took me about 4 hours to dig to the broken pipe, build a diversion trench to drain the water away from the broken pipe, and make emergency repairs that allowed half the house to have water. I was wet, cold, and miserable. I took a couple of breaks when I started shivering and needed to warm up in the house. I then took a long hot shower to wash off layers of mud and warm up. By the time I got to bed, I would only get two hours of sleep before I had to wake up to get to work. At that time I was a substitute teacher and I only was paid if I worked.

On my way home from work, I picked up what I needed to complete the repairs. At least it stopped raining. I still worked in the mud to make the permanent repairs which I finished by late evening.

I couple of days later, my wife was again complaining that I was not helping out like I should with the housework. I calmly said the next time the water pipe breaks on a cold stormy night, I will let you make the repairs and I will gladly do all the housework for a week in return. I will also let her mow the lawn in the summer heat, and do the outside work and I will do the housework instead.

She later told me that she does not know how I am able to deal with working in bad weather and get things done because she could not endure it and if I was not around, would call her father to take care of these things. I said men are wired differently. We endure uncomfortable situations be we put aside our feelings and just focus on doing what needs to be done. I will never know what it is like to carry a baby for 9 months and give birth to a human life. That is a miracle. But I am wired to do everything in my power to protect and provide for my family. When I was working on the plumbing in the storm, my only thought was I have to do this to get the water running again for her and our son. Nobody else was going to do it for me. I knew how to do the repairs, so I just did them. I was glad that she and our son could stay warm and dry.

I knew she understood when our son, after graduating college, was telling her he just did not know what he needed to do to find a woman to marry and have children with. They did not know I was in the other room and could hear them. She told him, be like your dad. There are still women out there who want a man that acts like a man. They want to know the person they marry and decide to have children with will take care of her and the children during a time in her life when she is most vulnerable. She needs to know that you will still provide for her and the children when she is really not able to do that.

A year later, when he was in graduate school, he met a woman that had nearly given up on dating because she could not find a man she knew would provide for her and the children and take care of business when she needs it the most. She let him engage in his hobbies of shooting and sparing with medieval weapons, and yes, getting the occasional bad bruise or other injury. She does not understand it but know he has to do it.

Normally, Jerry, I agree with your comments, but not so much this time. I believe your statistical analysis is correct, but Frank's larger point that the feminization of our culture has caused the Overton window to be dragged further left is spot on. I can't believe you would disagree that the fundamental "compromise to maintain a relationship" aspect of women does not aid the Left, esp. when compared to a man's inclination to "draw a line in the sand and fight" when they believe they are right. Men (with normal T levels) can stop the Overton window from the constant leftward shift, where most women will not. If you doubt that, why do you think we called Margaret Thatcher the "Iron Lady?" She is the exception, not the norm. Republican women are less susceptible, yes, but how many more women vote Democrat than Republican? You are the statistician, please feel free to check that out and see if my statement is accurate. Thanks.

I do accept Frank's larger point. My concern is that much is lost by oversimplification.

The point I was trying to make also is that men have also played a role in moving the Overton window to the left. Over the past couple of generations we have raised men who bought into the myth that they needed to compromise and get in touch with their feminine side to be better men. Yes, many men in the past did not treat women with any sort of respect. The men will be men was the excuse for groups of men trying to show off by making rude remarks about women they encountered in daily life. If a man did that to their wife or girlfriend, they would respond with extreme violence.

This is seen in the extreme in Islamic countries.

What the recent generations of men have done is given up their traditional role in society (that evolved through the millennia) and have at a minimum, not resisted the leftward movement of the Overton window and often times have helped to move it leftward.

One of the observations that came out of the Minnesota anti-ice riots was the majority of those involved were older, white, liberal women. These are the women who are most likely to be financially secure because they were stay at home moms who had husbands that provided them the financial security they now enjoy. The kids are grown and out on their own. Many are widows or divorced because they decided they needed to find themselves. They are looking for any cause that allows them to feel like they are still nurturing their children.

Another faction were the white liberal women that colleges are now turning out. These are the ones that have the time to do this because they are being paid by Soros and other wealthy, leftists that want a society of the elites ruling over the masses. (Ironically, this stems from the conservative school of thought in Europe). Traditionally, conservatives in American politics are aligned more with the classic liberal school of thought. These are the women that are most likely to be never married, divorced, or lesbians because they just hate men.

Recent studies have found that Gen Z women are more conservative than Gen X or Millenials. They are realizing that they cannot have it all, but are realizing that men have never had it all. Men spend many more hours away from the home because they working to provide for their family. Many would love to spend more time with their families, but reality is, life is not fair. Hard choices have to be made.

I saw a recent interview with one 20 something Gen Z college educated woman who stated she realized she had to make a choice. She wanted children but if she had a high powered career, she would spend the majority of her time away from her children and paying others to raise them. She did not want children and then hand them over to strangers to raise. So, she has decided that children are a higher priority than a high powered career. Later in life, she would regret not spending more time with her children but would never regret not becoming a CEO or other high paying executive. She now has strict rules about who she dates. In short, she wants to marry what we would call a traditional male.

The problem now is there are too many momma’s boys living in the basement while playing video games all day and complaining that they cannot find a girlfriend. What they are looking for is a mother figure that will take care of them so they can play with their friends all day.

I don't diassgree that men contributed to this decline into a matriarchy. The good news is that liberals are not procreating, church is on the rise again, younger people are rejecting radical feminized ideology, education is being reformed and the economy is being retooled toward more male employment. The risk is that the left gets more desperate seeing these things and goes more radical and violent in desperation.

Jerry Myers's avatar

The extreme rhetoric and violence they have exhibited recently is a sure sign they are desperate. You have pointed out the latest trends that suggest things are shifting back. The far left refuse to reexamine their philosophy because they are right and every one else is wrong. They are the elite that gets it.

I fully expect them to escalate the violence.
