Did you ever see the movie, “In Time?”
The concept behind it is fascinating as long as you don’t think too hard about it. In the movie, everyone stays young and beautiful while the time left in their lives is tracked on a watch. The poor tend to have barely enough time to live while the rich may have hundreds of hundreds of years to go and everything is measured and paid for with “time.” In the movie, pretty much the only way someone can die is via violence, drowning, falling off a cliff, that type of thing.
Nations are a little like the people in that movie. If they die, they don’t go peacefully into that good night. Most of the time they “die” via revolution, civil war or conquest.
In America’s case, being conquered by our enemies is highly unlikely. We have the best conventional military in the world and a large nuclear arsenal. We also are surrounded by oceans on two sides, have an enormous amount of land mass and have the most heavily armed civilian population in the world. The chances of a “Red Dawn” style attack being successful are extremely low.
In other words, we’re not getting conquered.
Could we have terrorists or foreign agents sneak in multiple nuclear, chemical or biological weapons? Yes, but as bad as it would be, we’d be likely to survive that and respond by nuking every major population center of any nation we held responsible.
We also can’t rule out the possibility that something horrible wipes out the whole human race. Like what? Nuclear war. Artificial intelligence getting out of control. Some superbug wiping us out. A massive asteroid hitting the planet. And so on and so on. All of which seem unlikely, but possible, except maybe the artificial intelligence becoming far smarter than us and deciding to wipe us out. According to Elon Musk, there’s a 20% chance of AI annihilating all of us, which seems a little low to me, but I guess time will tell.
So, we do face legitimate outside threats, but assuming the entire planet isn’t wiped out, we’ll probably survive them.
On the other hand, there are numerous ways a government can kill a country and tragically, ours seems to be simultaneously working on quite a few of them.
Debasing the currency something has led to revolutions throughout history because when your currency becomes so worthless no one will take it in trade anymore, everything essentially stops functioning and it’s every man for himself. If you take money out of the equation, how do you buy food? How do you pay the police and the military? Once you get to that point, it can become anyone’s ballgame – and of course, we have the biggest spending government in recorded human history. Yes, Trump and DOGE are working on this, but it would be a surprise if we could get to a balanced budget and no one is even talking about paying off our debt.
Government can also become so big and corrupt that it basically causes a nation to become non-functional. The rules become so convoluted, the bureaucracy so enormous, the corruption becomes so great and the taxes becomes so high that the people and the economy are crushed to death like a bunny rabbit caught by an anaconda. If you like an the insane boondoggles an obvious corruption that ranges into the billions, it’s easy to see our nation going down that path. Stagnating until nothing functions and people have no other choice but to break away.
One of the keys to the fall of the Roman Empire was their inability to control their borders. They began allowing whole tribes to enter their borders, stay together and stay loyal to their tribe instead of Rome. Even more foolishly, they allowed those tribes to join their military in great numbers. Eventually, the Germans realized that if they did the bulk of the fighting, why shouldn’t they be the ones to choose who ruled? So, that’s what they did. Illegal immigrants that aren’t loyal to the US have poured in by the millions and yes, there are powerful politicians that want them in our military. In fact, when the military became woke and faced recruiting woes under Biden, that was exactly the solution some Democrats suggested.
Government can also become tyrannical, which again, the Left in America is encouraging. They’ve been calling for getting rid of the Senate filibuster, which would inevitably lead to stacking the Supreme Court and race for both parties to get in charge and change the rules so the other side could never get into power again. It’s a recipe for dictatorship, revolution or civil war. There’s no chance our Republic would survive under those conditions.
A move toward outright tyranny is also a possibility. The real reason so many people are hellbent on disarming the law-abiding population is because they dream of doing things to the American people that they would get shot over. It’s a lot easier to be tyrannical when the people you’re pushing around don’t have guns.
If you’re an American, it’s fine to worry about China, Russia, Iran and North Korea. You should. It’s also smart to keep an eye on terrorist groups, but don’t ever kid yourself. The biggest threat to your freedom, your money and your country is your own government.
Certainly, our government with leftists in control will take us down. They won't stop trying until they are stamped out. The Trump administration may forestall that outcome, but only if it can withstand the plans that are being cooked up right now by these haters and traitors, as well as cement the next election with a traditional republican win, not some RINO! The election laws must be rolled back to their original format. Why that was left in the hands of the individual states was a mistake. A big one.
Your point about Rome is exactly right. Remember what Reagan said, “The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help.” And he only knew a sliver of what we’ve learned in the past two months.
